The United Arab Emirates now recognizes freelancers, and it has come up with freelance work permits to carry on with their business as freelancers. The freelance Visa Dubai with work permit is issued for a period of two years, and provides the opportunity to freelancers to sponsor their families as well. It is estimated that there are some 100,000 freelancers working in Dubai and the rest of the UAE.
Several free zones now offer freelancer work permits for designated activities (this varies by free zone). For instance, in Dubai, you could hope to be issued a Dubai freelance visa with work permit if you work in the areas of Media, Information Technology, or Education. You are expected to apply for your Dubai freelance visa with work permit at a relevant free zone like Dubai Media City, Dubai Production City, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Design District, or Dubai Knowledge Park.

You would need to submit the following documents when applying for a Dubai freelance visa with work permit
- Copy of your passport, plus a passport-sized photograph
- Emirates ID, if already resident in the United Arab Emirates
- Updated CV
- Introduction about your personal and professional background, as well as work experience
- Details of work already done or planned to be carried out in the UAE
- An expected income statement, plus a Bank reference letter
- Two references containing their contact details
- A work offer*
*If you do not have a work offer at present, you will be granted a Sole Establishment (this is the same as a Sole Proprietorship Firm license by the Free Zone Authority where you lodge your application.
The Bank reference letter should be from the bank where you currently hold an account in the country of your residence. The United Arab Emirates has strict laws against money laundering, and this is why the reference letter from your Bank is insisted upon.
If you are in the Media sector, you will have to submit a portfolio of your work for processing your Dubai Freelance Visa. If you intend to operate as a freelancer in the Education sector, you will have to additionally submit copies of your educational certificates.

Yes, this is indeed possible. However, most free zones will ask you for a No Objection Certificate or NOC from your current Local Sponsor before they can issue you a freelance work permit. The exception to the norm would be Umm Al Quiwan Free Trade Zone, which does not insist on a NOC when processing your application for a Dubai freelance visa with work permit.
Yes, you can able to sponsor them with your Dubai freelance visa. However, you need to rent an apartment or villa before you can bring them to the UAE. You also need to have legalized marriage and/or birth certificates for your dependents before you can sponsor them with your Dubai freelance visa.
You need to register for VAT with the Federal Tax Authority and start applying Value Added Tax at the rate of 5% on all your invoices if your turnover reaches AED 375,000
Normally, you are not allowed to have a business bank account for your freelance business. You are expected to use your personal bank account for the same. However, some free zones, such as Ajman Free Zone, enable you to have a corporate bank account for your business. Some other free zones help you open a personal bank account in the United Arab Emirates if you do not have one in the country.
