The Expo 2020 is scheduled to be held over six months between 1st October 2021 and 31st March 2022. It has been dubbed as ‘The World’s Greatest Show’ and given Dubai’s exceptionally strong tradition of being the best at all that it does, promises to be held on a scale never witnessed before in history.
The theme of Expo 2020 is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, based on the realization that fresh perspectives are all it takes to bring about real-world solutions to real-world problems. Accordingly, 192 countries from all over the world will be present at the Expo 2020, with each country having its own pavilion. This marks a first for the World Expo, and the venue is spread over a massive 1,080 acres on the outskirts of Dubai, well-connected by the metro and other forms of public transport. The Expo 2020 presents a great opportunity for anyone thinking about business setup in Dubai.
There are three themes for the Expo 2020 – Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity. Each country follows one of these three themes, and the United Arab Emirates has positioned itself under the theme of Opportunity. Some of the other major countries who have adopted the Opportunity theme are Japan, Norway, India and the United Kingdom. A few of those countries which have chosen the Mobility theme are Australia, France, Finland, Ireland, Russia, South Korea, and the United States of America. The Sustainability theme has among its list countries like Germany, Singapore, Sweden, and Brazil.
Expo 2020 has six mascots, namely Rashid, Latifa, Salama, Alif, Terra, and Opti. Rashid and Latifa are siblings. Salama is a ghaf tree, which is native to the region. She is portrayed as a place of wisdom for the world traveller. Alif is the guardian of the Mobility theme. Terra represents the Sustainability theme, and is green in colour. The Opportunity theme has Opti, a golden robot, as its official mascot.

The idea behind zeroing in on the word is to denote a connection of the world below with the one above. The Australian pavilion will also feature a cricket match.
- For the first time since the 1900s, the Expo 2020 will feature a pavilion dedicated exclusively to women in recognition of their efforts and how they have contributed to shaping the course of events throughout history. It also features chefs from the best restaurants in Singapore who serve up a delectable array of coffee and traditional snacks that consist of beef satay, chicken, green bean fritters, and tapioca.

- Russia’s colourful pavilion is themed around the traditional matryoshka doll, in which one doll, albeit a smaller one, is present inside another doll. Keeping in line with this concept, the small entrance to the pavilion will lead to a larger space inside, with the focus being on Russia’s development in science, medicine, and innovation. Ballerinas and dancers from the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow will also perform at Expo 2020.

- The Swiss pavilion features an installation which has been created using 1,000 crystal glass droplets. These are all of varying sizes and hang from a mirrored ceiling. Called Swiss Fog Magnified, the idea is to recreate the experience of walking through fog, but only with each water droplet magnified and crystallized. These water droplets glisten in the air, and the installation is an artistic representation of a ‘sea of fog’, including kinetic elements. It has been created by Swiss creative agency Bellprat Partner; and interestingly, the outside is inspired by Bedouin tents and a 70% recyclable structure.

Where to Stay
There is only one hotel that overlooks the venue – the Rove Hotel that is conveniently located next to the Al Wasl Plaza, the central part of the Expo 2020 venue. But that is not to say it is the only option. Dubai has the second-highest number of five-star hotels in the world. There are also several three-star hotels and four-star hotels that meet international standards. In Dubai, you can find both luxury hotels as well as business-class hotels. But even if you cannot afford to stay at the Burj Al Arab (said to be the world’s only seven star hotel), there is no need to worry. Dubai has been designed for two classes of people – the tourist and the businessman / businesswoman – and you are guaranteed to find a place that fits your budget perfectly, meeting all acceptable standards of hospitality as would be the case in your home country.
